How to make Henna Paste
In my previous article I wrote how natural henna is the best possible henna to use. I also wrote how the best way to get natural henna, is to make it yourself. But how do you actually make it?

Things you’ll need:
- Body art quality henna powder
- 100% pure essential oils that are high in terp such as eucalyptus, cajeput, tea tree or lavender oil
- Black tea brew
- Sugar
Take roughly 2 tablespoons of the henna powder (about 25 grams) and put in in a glass or stainless-steel bowl. Add about ¼ cup of the still hot tea brew, and mix it in until it gets a thick, yoghurt like consistency. Add 1 teaspoon of the essential oils and mix well. Cover the henna paste and let it rest for a few hours to get the natural dyes out. You will know it’s ready to be put in cones when the top layer is a dark brown color, and when you scrape the top layer it reveals a greenish brown color.
You can test the powder by putting some of it on your palm, letting it sit for 1 minute, and then rinsing it off. If you get a bright orange stain, it is ready to be used.
I highly recommend you to strain your henna through old stockings before you cone it, to get a super smooth paste. This will ensure easy application later on.
Once you have coned the henna paste you can keep it in the fridge for a few days if you plan on using it in the next few days, or you can freeze it. It can be kept in the freezer for a few months.
