When you get started with henna, it is quite hard to perfectly copy a design, let alone create your own design. With these tips you will be able to copy designs to the detail, and you will be able to create your own beautiful designs as well!

So how do you do this?

Instead of just blatantly copying other artists’ designs, looking at the separate components of a design will help you get a better understanding of exactly how a design is built up. Start taking designs apart and practice each individual element until you are satisfied with how they look. This will truly help you advance as an artist, as you will not have to rely on a ready-made design in order to create something. You will be able to create something yourself.

Take a look at some of your favorite henna designs. They most likely consist of some elements that are repeated throughout the design. Some elements that are often used are swirls, leaves, vines, dots, lines, and all kinds of variations of these. See the picture below to see exactly what I’m talking about.

Henna elements

Practicing these elements and the variations of those time after time again will help you get familiar with them, and will eventually help you to get neater lines and better designs overall. After all, it’s the small details that make the design.

So, start practicing with these, and soon you will see your results improve.
